Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars – A Horrible Trial & Tips for anyone who wants to be able to play the game

BrokenswordBroken Sword: The Shadows of the Templars is an unfortunate game to try to get to run on newer computers, even with the help of such people as the ScummVM development community. If you’re experiencing troubles with this classic Revolution Software title here are some general tips:

  1. The installation alone is problematic since the stupid system believes there isn’t enough memory on your hard-drive when there actually is (you only need the measly 222 Mb). The often repeated advice is to run the installation with compatibility set to Windows 95/98 settings or to fill up your hard-drive until you are in the neighbourhood of 6 Gb of free memory. I say bollocks to both and instead install the game on a USB memory stick or hard-drive and then copy the files to your hard-drive.
  2. If you own the Sold-Out Software version of the game, like I do, you’ll run into the annoying problem of always having the installer prompt come up every time you pop CD1 into your CD-ROM/DVD/BlueRay drive. The only way around this annoying problem is to shut off the automatic launcher for the drive. Otherwise, you can’t get rid of it. The only other solution might be to just have the prompt running in the background as you play since it doesn’t disrupt the game (unlike in the case e.g. LucasArts’ Games).
  3. If you have a crappy DVD drive like mine, it may have trouble reading CD-Roms as it will on occasion slow-down and just flat-out stop reading the disc at all (effectively freezing the game). In this case turn to ScummVM. You’ll have to copy many of the files from the game, the web-site has a detailed list of them (note: where it says you have to copy folders from the CDs, it actually means copying the files in those folders to the game’s folder on your hard-drive.

I find it funny how you can install, run and play Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror without any of these problems on newer computers, even the annoying Sold-Out prompt pop-up as you don’t need to switch between CDs like you do in BS1.

Walkthrough

Just as always, this is a topical walkthrough, where each puzzle is reduced to a question.

Part 1: Paris, Act I

How do I find the clown?

He obviously ran into the street opposite the cafe. Why not search there.

***

How do I open the sewer cover?

You need the sewer key.

***

Where do I get a sewer key?

You get it from the tool-box of the road-worker, but obviously he’s not just going to let you have it. Instead go pick up the newspaper from in front of the cafe and offer it to him. He goes off to place a bet on the horses and voila, one free sewer key.

***

I got out of the sewer and there’s a guy bugging me. How do I get rid of him?

He won’t start to co-operate until you show him you mean business. Show him the card that Rosso gave you. Now he thinks you are Rosso and he’ll tell you everything.

***

How do I get Todryk to tell me the killer’s address?

First you’ll need to give him a name to go with the address. You’ll have to go to another place where the killer did business. Show Nico the clown’s nose you picked up from the sewer and you’ll find out where the clown bought his costume.

***

How do I find out which customer of the costume shop is the killer?

You’ll need to give the shop-owner a clue to the person you’re looking for. Give him the handkerchief with the face paint smudged on it and he’ll give you the name Khan.

***

How do I get into Khan’s room?

Not an easy task. You can’t just break the door down, but there is a way into Khan’s room from the neighbouring one. But in order to get in you’ll need the key.

***

How do I get the room key?

You’ll need to distract the hotel clerk. Go talk to the lady playing the piano. The name Moerlin may come up in your conversation. Show her the picture of Khan and she’ll confirm that Moerlin and Khan are the same person. Now you can ask for her help in getting the key. She’ll have her purse put into the Hotel vault while you grab the key.

***

Khan came into the room and left. Now what?

Once you’ve searched Khan’s pants head down and talk to the lady again. She’ll tell you that Khan came down and gave something to the clerk.

***

How do I get Khan’s parcel?

You can go up and show Khan’s ID card which you found in his pocket. However, this will not work. Go talk to Lady Piermont one last time and she’ll help you get the parcel.

***

How do I get the parchment past the gangsters outside?

If you try walking through the front door the gangsters, Flap and Guido, will search you. If you happen to have the parcel with you this results in George swimming with the fishes. Head back up to the hotel room and go up on the windowsill again. Throw the parchment into the alley below. Now, you’ll get past the gangster and can retrieve the parchment from the alley.

***

What can I do with the parchment?

When looking over it with Nico, make sure you look at most or all of the pictures and discuss them. If you exit the parchment conversation and look at it again, Nico says you’ll need the help of a guy called Lobineau.

***

I’m at the museum but Lobineau isn’t there. What now?

Take a look at the display in the middle of the room. Notice the tripod inside the glass case, it’s the same as in the manuscript. Once you read the text, George realises it’s fromIreland. You can head back to Nico’s or straight to the airport from there.

***

Part 2: Ireland

***

Where can I find Peagram?

Unfortunately Peagram has left town. But his gem hasn’t. Someone in town is holding on to it.

***

How do I get Sean Fitzgerald to give me the gem?

You’ll have to put him on the spot. Maguire, the little kid, and Doyle at the bar will testify that they saw Fitzie working at Peagram’s dig.

***

Fitzgerald won’t confess. What to do?

Go talk to Maguire one more time. He saw Fitzie and Peagram exchange the gem.

***

Fitzgerald got run over by Khan’s Ferrari. What now?

He must have dropped the package. It’s fallen through the grating on the street into the pub’s cellar.

***

How do I get into the cellar?

O’Leary won’t let you go down there, but you can convince him to let you go down there if there was to be a problem with his beer pumps. Outside, you’ll notice Khan’s car wrecked the little box near the door. Press the switch on it and then go order a beer from O’Leary. Not only wont his pump work, but his dishwasher is about to die as well. However, you’ll have to fix the dishwasher first before he’ll let you into the cellar.

***

How do I fix the dishwasher?

There’s something wrong with the plug. You need a bit of steel wire to fix it. The guy who keeps sneezing is making a rabbit-snare. Ever playedMonkeyIsland2? Wait for him to put the wire on the table and grab it from under his nose when he sneezes.

***

I’m down in the cellar but I can’t see anything. What to do?

The only thing you can interact with is the lever. Pull it and you’ll be able to open the grating from outside to let a little daylight into the cellar. You’ll also run in to KHAAAAAAN!

***

How do I get into the castle?

You’re obviously going to have to climb up the stack of hay, but the old man won’t let you. Tell him about Fitzie and you’ll learn he’s his uncle. He’ll leave to mount a search party to find Fitzie and you can now climb up the haystack.

***

The haystack isn’t tall enough to reach the top of the wall. How do I get over?

Notice a crack in the wall. Use your trusty sewer-key to make a footing.

***

How do I get past the goat?

You can’t make it to the ladder in the back without the goat charging at you. The second you fall down, click the tractor-plough off to the side and George will dash to move it. The goat will get tangled in the plough.

***

I’m in the chapel. What do I do here?

You’ll notice the statue is missing from the wall and it’s too heavy for George to lift back into place. However, the statue will make a set of holes on the ground. This will be useful if you want to make a copy.

***

How do I make a copy of the statue’s spikes?

Look over to the table in the chapel. The bag contains plaster. Use it with some water to make a mould of the spike-holes.

***

How do I get water up to the chapel?

You need to carry it in a towel. Doyle is leaning on one in the pub. Pick it up when he raises his arm. Go down to the cellar where there’s a faucet and wet it there.

***

Part 3: Paris, Act II & III

NOTE: Some of the puzzles described in this section can be completed before or after you go toSpain for the first time.

***

Where do I find Jacques Marquet?

Why not ask Officer Mou. He’s at the Poste de Police.

***

How do I get past Nurse Grendel?

You’ll need to disguise yourself as a doctor. Find a white jacket.

***

Where do I get a doctor’s jacket?

In the closet in the hallway. You have to distract the guy polishing the floor. Go and unplug his polishing machine and quickly take the coat from the closet.

***

How do I get past the annoying patient?

He keeps insisting you take his blood pressure, but he also keeps saying you’re not doing it properly. You need a little help. Go back to the lobby and talk to the important looking doctor. He’s Dr. Haggenmeyer. His nephew is ordered to follow you around. Give him the blood-pressure gauge and tell him to use it on the annoying patient to get past him.

***

How do I get the tripod out of the museum?

Jacques Marquet told you that Flap and Guido are going to try to steal it. You’ll have to hide in the sarcophagus, but the curator will notice you playing around with it. Go and use the switch in the back and open up the big window. When the curator goes to close it, quickly sneak into the sarcophagus.

***

Flap and Guido are stealing the tripod. How do I stop them?

If you haven’t already figured it out, push the totem-pole over.

***

What do I do with the tripod?

If you go to the museum you should see a new character there. It’s Lobineau. He’ll tell you where Montfaucon is. This is where you’ll need to use the tripod.

***

How do I get down into the sewer at Montfaucon?

You have to get rid of the Gendarme watching the juggler (if there is no juggler, it means you haven’t got the tripod yet). Firstly, go talk to the juggler and insist you can juggle better than him. After you’ve been publicly humiliated; go talk to the Gendarme. Bring up the clown nose and the Gendarme says it would be funnier if you juggled badly with the clown-nose. Now, talk to the juggler again and try juggling again. He’ll leave as will the Gendarme and now you get use the trusty sewer-key once again.

***

I’m down the sewer under Montfaucon. What do I do now?

Try knocking on the arches with the sewer-key. One of them is hollow and George breaks it to reveal the mechanism for a hidden door. If you pull the lever the door will get stuck. No problem, there’s a boat with a chain which you can use to open the secret door.

***

I’m in the cave beyond the secret door under Montfaucon. What now?

Firstly, you have to spy on the meeting of the Neo-Templars. Look through the crack for this. Do it twice so you will see them leave and won’t accidently walk in on them and get shot. Secondly, once the meeting is over, go down and use the tripod and gem on the pedestal in the middle of the room. It will reveal the word “Marib”, on the floor. This is the town inSyriawhere you will need to go.

***

Part 4: Spain, Act I

Note: You can go to eitherSpain orSyria at any point after the tripod heist and once Lobineau has had a chance to have a look at the manuscript.

***

How do I get past the gardener?

You’ll have to tamper with his hose. Go to the side of the house where the garden-hose starts. Use the blood-pressure gauge on the hose and Lopez will go indoors. Now you can get in the house but you still have to distract Lopez one more time. Go down the corridor and some dogs will start barking at you. Hide behind the suit of armour and Lopez will not see you. Now you can head up the stairs.

***

What can I do in the mausoleum?

Take a look at the different items so you can discuss them with the Countess. Pick up the bible on the lectern to reveal the chess-board pattern. The minute you bring this up, the Countess realises that the chess-board is a part of a puzzle. Place the three chess-pieces in the correct order along the six vacant spots and the puzzle is solved.

***

Part 5: Syria

Note: You can go to eitherSpain orSyria at any point after the tripod heist and once you’ve used the tripod under Montfaucon.

***

I’m in Marib. What now?

Walk off to the left where you’ll meet the carpet-seller. Look at the carpet in the middle. Does the pattern look familiar? It’s the same as on the matchbook. Give it to the carpet seller and you’ll get to Club Alamut.

***

How can I get Club Alamut’s owner’s toilet-brush back?

Go back to the market place and take a look at Arto (right-click) the kebab-seller. You’ll notice he’s basting his kebabs with a toilet-brush. Strike a deal with Nejo, the little kid, and he’ll help get the brush in exchange for the red ball.

***

What can I do at Club Alamut?

Talk to Ultar the taxi-driver. Show him your picture of Khan and he’ll reveal that he’s on the trail of Klausner and gone off to Bull’s Head Hill. You can hire a ride from Ultar, but you’ll need 50 dollars.

***

Where can I get 50 dollars?

Have you talked to the American couple, the Hendersons? They’re looking for an ancient souvenir. There’s a promising looking statue on the shelf at Nejo’s stand. However, you don’t have money to buy it. Pet the cat on the table and it will jump up on to the shelf. Now, ring the bell and Nejo’s dad will show up. The ball bouncing off of him will scare the cat and knock over the statuette. Pick it up. It doesn’t look quite old enough though. Rub it with your greasy tissue to make it look ancient. Now barter with Duane and he’ll give you the money.

***

Ultar’s truck’s fan-belt broke. What now?

Use the toilet-keys and visit the bathroom at Club Alamut. Use the keys on the towel-dispenser. Take the towel and give it to Ultar. He’ll use it to fix the truck. Voila! It’s off to Bull’s Head Hill.

***

I’m at Bull’s Head Hill but I can’t do anything. What now?

You’ll notice a crack on the cliff. You’ll have to climb down it. Break off a branch from the young tree nearby and tie the towel to it. Now use the combination to climb down the crack. On the cliff edge notice the niche near where there’s obviously a secret passage. Pull the ring inside the niche and the secret passage will open.

***

I’m trapped in the cave. What now?

Search Klausner’s body and you’ll find the lens he was looking for. Then take a look at the carving at the back of the cave. Before you know it someone else is about to drop by… Khan!

***

Khan’s got me at gun-point. How do I escape?

Firstly, tell the truth when he asks you about Klausner and the cave. If you lie he’ll probably shoot you. After this he asks whether you want to die like a man or a dog. Tell him you’ll die like a man and he’ll be impressed enough to want to shake your hand. Finally, it’s time to use the hand-buzzer to knock him out. Then jump off the cliff to make your escape.

***

Part 6: Paris, Act IV

***

What can I do with the lens?

Head to the church at Montfaucon, there’s a new character for you to meet, the priest. Talk to him and show the chalice. He’ll polish it up for you. While he’s doing that take a look at the statue of a knight with a scroll in hand. Use the scroll to look through. You’ll see a part of the stain-glass window. So what, “big deal”, you say? Well, use the lens and instead you’ll now see a burning man and a date in Roman numerals. Go back to the priest and get the chalice. He said he’s seen the coat of arms on it in the tomb in the corner. Go over, you’ve discovered the tomb of Don Carlos.

***

What do I do with the chalice?

Go talk to Lobineau (after your trip toSyria) and discuss the bearded icon you saw in the cave. He’ll say there’s been another similar idol discovered inParis. You’ll need to get to the excavation site and use the chalice there (once you have you can go toSpainfor a second trip).

***

How do I get past the guard?

This is tricky. Firstly, look at the door across from the one he’s guarding. Now talk to him and ask that you’ll be given the key to the bathroom. In there you’ll find some soap on the sink. Make an indent of the key on the soap and use your left-over plaster fromIreland. Use the mould with the sink and George will make a plaster imitation of the key. However, it won’t pass for the real thing just yet. You need to sink it in the metal-colour paint-pot outside but the painter wont let you near his pot. Call Nico on the phone near the site and she’ll help distract the painter long enough for you to dip the fake key in the paint-pot. You’re not done yet, the guard can still tell if the key is a fake from the feel of it. Turn off the thermostat and the guard will put his gloves on. Now, ask to use the bathroom keys again. Go in and switch the real key with the fake one. Now, lastly, you need to distract the guard. Call Nico again and this time she’ll get the guard to answer the phone and go talk to the painter. The painter and guard will start to argue and now you can get to the excavation site.

***

Part 7: Spain, Act II

***

How do I find out the significance of the biblical quotes?

Get the bible from the mausoleum and give it to the Countess.

***

How do I find the hidden well?

Talk to Lopez and he’ll tell you the secrets of water dowsing.

***

How do I get a Y of hazel?

Ignore the big hazel trees Lopez points to and instead look at the tiny hazel bush near the house where you plugged Lopez’s hose last time.

***

What do I do down in the well?

Pull one of the lion’s teeth and be prepared to jump out of the way when it falls over. Use the mirror you find inside the house to reveal a key-hole on the wall behind the stone-lion (use the mirror on the sunlight coming down into the well).

***

Where do I find the key to fit in the keyhole in the well?

It’s in the big candle in the mausoleum. Use the long staff to close the window in the mausoleum. Then use your greasy tissue with the staff and light it using the candles on the lectern. Now light up the big candle and it will reveal the key.

***

Part 8: Scotland

***

What do I do on the train?

Head out of your cart and down to where the toilets are. You’ll see Guido. Go back to your cart and you’ll notice that Nico and the old lady have vanished.

***

How do I find Nico?

Go into the neighbouring cart, the one with the twoNewcastlefans. Climb out the window and on to the roof of the train. Head right to the ladder to the next cart. Don’t head left unless you want George to fall off.

***

Eklund’s got me at gun-point. What to do?

Pull the emergency break.

***

How do I open the secret door?

Use the handle on the ancient mechanism left in the church and it should come off. Then, remove the cog. Use the cog on the demon statue. Dig through the pile of junk to find another cog and use it with the demon as well. Now use the handle and it should open the door.

***

I’m trying to escape and Guido is in my way. What now?

Pick up the torch and throw it on the gun-powder. It won’t blow up the church, but Nico’s handbag full of C4 will.
