Grosjean confirmed to continue at Lotus
Not that it’s really news, but Romain Grosjean’s contract with the Lotus team has been extended for next year. Even though there was very little doubt of Grosjean’s continuation contract (given Eric Boullier is his manager), there had been some rumbling within the team that Grosjean would be replaced for next season (possibly by either Heikki Kovalainen or Kamui Kobayashi). However, now it’s been made official that Grosjean is continuing with Lotus and I personally am happy with the decision. Despite Grosjean’s erratic driving, we have to remember that this was only his second full season, after having been out of the loop for two seasons, so it would be unfair in my view to give him the boot when he’s still trying to find his pace.
This of course is bad news for Heikki Kovalainen, from whom we have yet to have heard about where he will drive (if anywhere) next season. Caterham and Force India are the only teams yet to have announced both of their drivers. Force India already announced that they were not interested in hiring Heikki earlier this year, so right now it seems Heikki will be leaving the sport unless Caterham decides to hire him as Charles Pic’s team-mate for next season (which would be interesting to see: two Finns with Frenchmen as their team-mates).
As for the remaining Force India seats, it now seems very likely Adrian Sutil will finally be making his comeback after an assault trial and a prison sentence last year forced him to sit out on the 2012 season. I truly hope Sutil has learned his lesson from his prior drunken escapade and wont repeat his mistakes, since he is a talented driver and I’m actually happy to see him back. There is still a possibility that Kamui Kobayashi will jump in the Force India next season if Paul Di Resta’s contract isn’t continued (I have a feeling it will be though).
